What Happens Between Leaving Your Job and Your Business Actually Paying the Bills?

Jordana Rachelle spent about 15 years in retail before her psychic and energy healing business became her family’s full-time income. It took years to get there, and the business she runs today isn’t the one she started with.

When I asked Jordana how long she’d been doing this full-time, I was expecting a number. I got this instead:

“For many years I wasn’t really making any money. You know, I was working super hard and constantly showing up online and putting in all the effort, but it wasn’t paying our bills, our rents.”

Okay…THIS is the part I wanted to hear about.

These days, Jordana runs a business built on psychic readings, energy healing and mentorship for women. Her clients find her on Threads. Her family lives on what she makes. But between her last retail job and right now, there were years of savings, a house sale, her husband rearranging his own work and a business that had to completely change shape.

We love talking about the leap. I always want to know what happened after it. Who paid the rent? And what do you do when “getting the business off the ground” takes years instead of months?

Fifteen years in retail, and she was done

Before any of this, Jordana spent about 15 years in retail. She worked her way into management, hired and trained people, ran stores and could sell.

She was also miserable.

“I was so, so, so depressed.”

Then she said the line I think a lot of women can relate to…

“You could be good at something, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.”

I felt that one.

At first, jewelry looked like the way out. A friend already had a jewelry business, and the two of them were making plans. But Jordana was running out of patience for building someone else’s dream.

“I just got really tired of making men successful.”

I laughed. She wasn’t joking.

After her second child was born, Jordana went through severe postpartum depression. When she went back to work, she took a jewelry job close to home at a store that barely had any customers. (Retail without customers is its own special kind of hell.)

She told her husband she was done. He asked what she wanted to do instead.

She had no idea.

The Facebook group that turned into a business

While her kids were at daycare, Jordana started going live in a Facebook group to talk about how she was working through postpartum depression. Just talking. The group grew to more than 5,000 moms around the world.

That turned into a business around plant medicine, helping mothers let go of the guilt and shame of choosing plants over pills. News outlets in the US and Canada picked up her story, including NBC Nightly News.

Things were going really well.

Then 2020 happened.

A big chunk of her community turned on her. Women called her a cult leader and started groups and pages just to talk about her. She got threats. She described the whole thing as being at a witch trial.

So I asked how she handled it. She didn’t pretend.

“I would definitely block, delete, publicly shame people who disagreed with me.”

She didn’t have the communication tools back then. Occupational therapy, reading, online coaches and a lot of personal development work changed that over time. When I asked her to sum up then versus now, she didn’t even hesitate.

“So not well… but today fantastically.”

I loved that she didn’t try to make it sound better than it was. She handled it badly, she knows it, and she handles it a whole lot better now.

Becoming a psychic was not on the list

And then there’s her mom.

Jordana’s mother was a well-known psychic, with TV commercials, radio shows and even work with the police. Jordana wanted to learn from her. Her mother wouldn’t teach her.

So Jordana stayed in retail.

“It really wasn’t part of my plan. Like I was in retail.”

Then in 2020, a friend gifted her a quantum energy healing session. She went in with something specific she wanted to understand and came out saying it changed her life. Within a year, she’d signed up for the healer’s certification program. That’s where she started developing her own psychic abilities and bringing readings into her work.

All of this was happening the same year her first business was falling apart. Busy year.

Then she moved countries

In 2021, Jordana moved her family out of Canada to a country where cannabis and CBD weren’t legal. They hadn’t even applied for residency yet. And her entire business was built around plant medicine.

You can see the problem.

“I didn’t want to get deported.”

Also, after a year of being called a cult leader online, she wasn’t exactly looking for more attention on her family. The plant medicine business couldn’t keep going the way it had. Luckily, she’d already started doing energy healing and psychic readings, so she wasn’t starting from zero.

From 2021 to 2023, she says she was throwing spaghetti at the wall. Slowly, she got clearer on the work she wanted to do and who she wanted to do it for.

Meanwhile, the bills kept coming.

Okay, but who was paying the rent?

This is always the part I want to know.

When Jordana wanted to leave retail, she and her husband had to figure out if they could live on one income. For years, the business didn’t cover their expenses. They lived off the sale of their house and their savings for quite a while, and her husband changed his own work situation to make it fit.

As she put it, he “had to figure out his work life too in order to make my work life work.”

They’ve since sold two homes, partly so they could live in the Dominican Republic and return to Canada. Right now they rent a 100-year-old duplex. Her husband hasn’t worked for the past two or three years, and Jordana has been the primary earner for about two.

None of that makes it into the highlight reel. She talked openly about the stress and the fear of trying to make it all work.

This is why I ask. Most people who want to leave their jobs already have the idea. What stops them is rent.

The clients who never like a single post

I’d seen one of Jordana’s posts about going from $1,000 months to $9,000 months, so obviously I had to ask where those clients were coming from.

“Most of my recent business has all come from Threads.”

And a lot of them never like or comment on anything.

“They’re just wallflowers that are reading my posts, heading to my bio, and then deciding to book me immediately.”

Wallflowers with credit cards. I love that!

For a long time, Jordana didn’t want to narrow her audience.

“I hate boxes and I hate labels.”

Then, over the past couple of months, she noticed something. Every time she posted about conversations with her mother, whom she describes as narcissistic, those posts took off. One pinned post was close to 100,000 views when we talked, and the comments were full of women describing the same thing with their own mothers.

The women showing up were pretty specific: high-achieving, self-aware, already been to therapy, already listened to the podcasts, already done the personal development work…and still stuck.

Her offers got clearer too. There’s a 45-minute psychic reading. There’s Reignite Your Spark, a six-month mentorship with monthly readings and energy healing sessions. And there’s the Homecoming Collective, an online community with modules, meditations, journal prompts and healing transmissions.

What she does with the time

When I asked what life looks like now, Jordana talked about going to the gym whenever she wants, having lunch with her husband and grocery shopping on her own schedule.

“The luxury of our life is time freedom.”

Her favorite example?

“I don’t have to go to Costco on a Saturday.”

Listen…avoiding Costco on a Saturday is a perfectly valid business goal.

Making more money didn’t fix the money

Toward the end, I asked what she’s choosing for herself now that she might not have chosen 10 years ago. She laughed, because she’d made a big decision that very day.

The business has been having good months back to back. But the savings are mostly gone, there’s no real cushion, her debt isn’t coming down and they have moving expenses coming up. And she knows she’s good at spending money too.

So as of that day, her husband is managing the finances and Jordana gets a weekly income.

“It’s not about making more. It’s about really learning to handle and manage what I’m currently receiving.”

Nobody really tells you this part. You finally get the business paying the bills…and then you have to learn what to do with the money.

There’s no big finish here. She made the decision the same day we talked. She’s figuring it out. And I loved her honesty about it all.
